The meal of a lifetime

One of the great things about travelling is that you get to try other cuisines. So it should come as no surprise that if you are invited to a barbecue with a bunch of American expats in Trinidad, you are in for quite a treat. Or should it?

Tonight, my dad took me to a bbq arranged by a couple of guys from his work.

These guys took barbecues so seriously it was ridiculous.

To begin with, one of the guys actually designed his own barbecue. Then he had it welded by a friend, and one of the other guys present had it improved. The whole thing must have weighed about 100 kg. It took a full 5 kg (10 lbs) of coal to get fumed up.

But it was worth it. Truly, honestly, and fully.

I eat vegetarian food most of the time - especially when I cook food myself. It is cheaper, I imagine it is better for me, on the whole, and in the grand scheme of things, I imagine it improves my karma. But all-over, I don’t mind eating meat. And tonight was the reward for that.

Tonight, I had the best meal of my life - bar none. They served basically meat only, but it was the best meat I’ve ever had. Soft, tender, and perfectly cooked, with a degree of perfection that is beyond words. Some of the sirloin steak they had prepared was so tender it was nearly the same hardness as freshly cooked bread. Absolutely incredible. THe chicken wings they prepared (smoked, in a separate cabinet on the side of the bbq itself) was - by a mile - the best chicken I’ve ever tasted.

Shocking. Downright shocking.

It was worth overhearing endless conversations about oil drilling and other stuff.

Now, I’ve just returned from the pool for a near-midnight-swim. I’m about to dive in the shower, and will then go to sleep.

’tis been a good day.
